It is probably the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne I have had so far. We all left with joy and satisfaction like just travelled to Japan.
The freshness and quality of seafood, ingredients are top notch. You can tell this when you try their Sushi and Sashimi platter. Sukiyaki and Tempura Moriawase are great too.
It has nice low lighting and minimalist decor, such a nice atmosphere. Service is great too. The price is high but it is understandable for experience and quality.
Kenzan is a well-known Japanese restaurant in the CBD, situated within the food court level of an office building complex. With its unassuming location, it'd be easy to dismiss but its quality and longevity in the dynamic Melbourne food scene speaks for itself.
We had the omakase set at the sushi bar, which made for a better ambience as we were facing away from the tables. The restaurant truly does omakase as it should be, asking for our budgets and preferences to design the courses accordingly.
First course (slow cooked beef) was average, but the sashimi and sushi courses were amazing and made us forget a disappointing start. Highly recommend asking for the omakase set, you won't regret it.
Felt like I was in Japan. Sushi is amazing and the best I've had in Australia. We had several dishes but the sushi and sashimi are the star of the show. Liked it so much that we booked again. It looks like a small place from the outside, but it is a nice sized restaurant. Staff are great as well.
On a rainy night, we entered this welcoming place and were quickly shown to our table with menus. We'd already checked out the menu beforehand so knew exactly what we wanted.
First came the Tempura, which was lightly battered and disintegrated on contact with the dipping sauce. Next came the Chawan Mushi - steamed egg with seafood and mushroom. This was smooth and subtle, comforting on a cool night. We then had Chirashi with various sashimi and seafood on rice, plus the grilled eel on rice. Both were delicious and well presented.
We were really well looked after by a very lovely lady from Yokohama. The dimly lit space and our location gave us a spacious feeling. The restaurant also has private rooms available for booking. Kenzan is a bit of an institution and I hope to see this continue for a long time to come.
Amazing fresh Japanese food. Wide and delicious options to choose from. Sushi made just like it is in Japan…with the wasabi inside between the rice and fish - the way it should be yum!! Service exceptional and very quick. Relaxing place to go for lunch and feel comfortable enjoying this awesome food. Highly recommend.
Beautiful spot for dinner! My husband took me here for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. The food was absolutely delicious and high quality! Felt like I had been transported to Japan for a few hours. Will definitely be going back! The staff were so friendly and very kind and respectful of all diners. Thank you so much for such a wonderful evening.
We had a weekday dinner here. The atmosphere was really nice. It was quite busy for a weekday so better have a booking before dropping in. We ordered Lobster flavoured miso soup, Fresh oysters with citrus flavoured ponzu vinegar, Deluxe sushi and Shabu shabu. The entree was really nice. Oysters were fresh and delicious. Sushi was good but not very extraordinary. The shabu shabu was good but it can taste bland to some people so order carefully. Overall good Japanese cuisine experience.
Some of my favourite Japanese food in Melbourne! The ambience is lovely and service is wonderful! My favourite was the Unagi and the sushi. Highly recommend!
